An excerpt from “In God we Still Trust “ by Dr. Richard G Lee:
“For the word of God is living and active ….a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”(Hebrews 4:12)
In the first half of the twentieth century, Dr Howard A. Kelly was a pioneer in the field of gynecology and radium therapy, a professor at Johns Hopkins University, a surgeon at John Hopkins Hospital, and the author of twenty books and five hundred articles.
When asked, Dr Kelly shared the secret of his greatness:
I rise regularly at six, and after dressing, give all of my time until our eight 0’clock breakfast to the study of God’s word. I find time for brief studies during the day and again in the evening. I make it a general rule to touch nothing but the Bible after the evening meal.
What difference did the Bible make in Dr. Kelly’s life?
The Bible….reveals to me, as does no other books in the world, that which appeals to a physician—-a clear diagnosis of my spiritual condition, showing me clearly what I am by nature, one lost in sin and alienated from life that is in God. I find it to be a consistent and wonderful revelation. From Genesis to Revelation, of the character of God…. It also reveals a tenderness and nearness of God in Christ that satisfies the heart’s yearnings and presents the infinite God, Creator of the world, as taking our very nature upon Him in infinite love to become one of His people in order to redeem them,
After reading this, I know that I do not spend enough time in God’s word.
Yours in Christ
Carl
